Bringing Joy To the Elderly

Last Sunday, Chords for Change, alongside our talented musical performers, had the honor of singing at Merry Heart Nursing Home in Succasunna, New Jersey. Our goal was to bring the magic of live music to the elderly residents, uplift their spirits, and bring smiles to their faces. The entire team, including Director of Communications Katie Klebez and Chief of Staff Jack Sacchiero, organized the event with our staff. We distributed cookies and cupcakes to residents from two different units, followed by separate performances from our artists.

Alyssa Doughty, our Director of Volunteer Outreach, brought smiles and laughter to nursing home residents by singing ‘Stupid Cupid’.

A moment between one resident and our President, Evangeline Pabalan.

What we weren’t prepared for was the profound joy it brought to our own hearts and spirits. As we performed, we witnessed the transformative power of music unfold before our eyes. The residents’ reactions—bright smiles, dancing in their wheelchairs, and lip-syncing to our songs—filled us with immense joy. Their engagement with the melodies and lyrics underscored the significance and impact of our efforts.

The significance of serving the elderly, particularly those in nursing homes, cannot be overstated. Many older adults experience isolation from their families and a disconnection from the vibrant world around them. By providing music from their younger years, we create a powerful bridge to the past, evoking cherished memories and fostering the emotional connections they long for.

Beyond mere entertainment, this event was our way of giving back to those who have contributed so much throughout their lives. We hope our service and performances honored their work and contributions. As representatives of today’s youth, it is crucial that we show our appreciation for the true heroes of yesteryear and acknowledge their role in shaping the world we live in today.

Chords for Change is excited to announce that we have been invited back to Merry Heart Nursing Home. We are honored to continue visiting the facility regularly to spread joy and bring smiles to the residents’ faces.

Our set list from the performance on September 1, 2024, included:

  • Alyssa Doughty – “Stupid Cupid” by Connie Francis

  • Joel Garcia – “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley

  • Logan Tankel – “Franklin Shepard Inc.” from Merrily We Roll Along

  • Sarah Holgado and Evangeline Pabalan – “L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole

  • Connor Mullahy and John Groff – “Let It Be” by The Beatles

  • Evangeline Pabalan – “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Valli

We are grateful for the efforts and hard work of the entire Chords for Change team and look forward to sharing photos from this special event and updates on what’s next for our organization.

What amazing resource or fixture in the community will we help or spread joy to next? Stay tuned! We’re just getting started!
